Course: 927     Type: Hands-On     Duration: 4 Days

Frequently Asked Questions

What is this course about?

In this hands-on course, you gain the fundamental knowledge and skills to create and configure Oracle Database 11g, manage memory and storage effectively and deploy essential procedures to maintain your organization's data. You also learn to control user activity, perform flashback operations and partition large tables for ease of management.

During this course, you gain experience with a variety of Oracle tools including Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) 11g Database Control, Data Pump and SQL*Plus.

Who will benefit from this course?

With the increased options in Oracle 11g, database administrators need to learn how to make appropriate use of these tools and acquire the necessary expertise to employ them effectively. This course is designed for professionals whose work involves or will involve the administration of an Oracle 11g database:

  • Database administrators who have had experience administering databases other than Oracle and who need to learn how to perform the administration tasks that are unique to Oracle 11g;
  • Application or systems developers who find that their role is being changed to one of a DBA or assistant DBA, or who are interested in the techniques used to properly administer Oracle 11g databases; and
  • Systems administrators who want to learn how to properly manage the available system resources to effectively run Oracle 11g on their machines.

What background should I have?

You should have some background and experience working with a SQL-based RDBMS. Experience equivalent to Course 926, Oracle® Database 11g: A Comprehensive Hands-On Introduction, or Course 593, Oracle® Database 10g: A Comprehensive Hands-On Introduction, is assumed. Course 234, Developing SQL Queries for Oracle® Databases: Hands-On, is helpful but not required.

How does Oracle Database 11g differ from Oracle 10g?

Oracle 11g is a superset of Oracle 10g and Oracle 9i. This version has enhanced features for increased manageability and provides an improved graphical interface within Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) 11g Database Control to facilitate database administration. In addition, Oracle 11g continues to offer the well-established tools and features that finely control database activity.

What version of Oracle is used?

This course is currently running on Oracle 11g, Release 1 on the Windows Server 2003 platform.

Is this course useful to me if I work with an earlier version of Oracle?

This course gives an introduction to database administration on Oracle 11g. If you are evaluating Oracle 11g, or if you are currently working on an earlier version but are planning to move to administration on Oracle 11g, then this course is for you.

Will it matter if I use Oracle on a different platform such as UNIX or Linux?

No, most of the topics covered are not operating system-specific. However, issues that are affected by the operating system are highlighted and the differences are noted in the course.
