Frequently Asked Questions

What is this course about?

SharePoint enables the creation of business solutions that are critical to the operation of an organization, including document management, collaboration, knowledge sharing, business data portals and content-managed Web sites. In this course, you gain the skills necessary to administer MOSS 2007, including the management of shared services, security, backup and recovery and server optimization.

Who will benefit from this course?

Those involved in managing an existing SharePoint environment, including system and Web administrators.

What is Windows SharePoint Services?

Windows SharePoint Services, a component of Windows Server 2003, allows teams to build Web sites where they can share information and collaborate on documents in real time, whether team members are in the next office or in another country. SharePoint sites are custom built using Web Parts and ASP.NET components and act as centralized hubs where team members can work together on documents and other business-critical tasks in a seamless manner. The open access available via SharePoint has the potential to create greater and more productive team communication while producing vital documentation faster than traditional collaborative methods such as e-mail.

What is the difference between MOSS 2007 and WSS 3.0?

Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 is ideal for a small to mid-size organization. Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 is appropriate for large, complex organizations; however, WSS is built into MOSS 2007. WSS is the foundation for a series of Microsoft products such as Project Server, Team Foundation Server, Portfolio Server and MOSS 2007. Both MOSS 2007 and WSS 3.0 are included in this course.

What is Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007?

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS 2007) is the upgraded version of Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003. SharePoint Server 2007 offers workflow functionality, extensive integration with Microsoft Office products, ASP.NET 2.0 compatibility and many other enhanced features. It allows an organization to organize data in a centralized, web-based application.

What background do I need?

Knowledge of SharePoint at the level of Course 538, SharePoint® Technologies: A Comprehensive Hands-On Introduction, is assumed. Experience with Windows Server 2003 is helpful.

How does this course relate to Course 538, SharePoint Technologies: A Comprehensive Introduction?

While Course 538, SharePoint® Technologies: A Comprehensive Hands-On Introduction, focuses on the front-end and the end-user experience, this course focuses on setting up and managing the applications, technologies and the infrastructure used by SharePoint.

What is the difference between this course and 954?

  • Backup and recovery
  • Monitoring, troubleshooting and performance
  • Administrative tasks needed to scale out existing deployments

Do I need to have experience working in Web development or with SharePoint Designer to be successful in this course?

No, you do not need to have experience working in Web development or with SharePoint Designer to succeed in this course. The majority of time in this course is spent on integrating SharePoint into an existing Windows environment.

Why do I need Windows Server 2003 experience to take this course?

SharePoint Server 2007 uses resources from ITS and the Active Directory. Experience with Windows Server 2003 is necessary to fully understand the technical concepts taught in the course, such as preparing the office network environment and replacing traditional file servers.

Do I need SQL Server 2005 experience to take this course?
